Cardinal Legacy Gift - Class of 2026

It is a long tradition for a graduating senior class to “gift” the school with something as a farewell contribution, a way of leaving a lasting mark before they move on, their legacy gift. Funds for this gift are collected early in the school year, and ideas are discussed in the student government class, with the school administration, and with their fellow classmates. This long tradition teaches students about philanthropy and giving back to a community that has supported students over a four year span. It builds school spirit and gives the senior class a shared project to rally around and something to remember upon their many returns.

In past Cardinal years, a new bench, a piece of art or mural, a scoreboard, landscaping, a plaque, and updated equipment for a sports team has been gifted. The lasting, physical connection between a graduating class and the institution is one the school values and shares proudly with current students.

This year, the Class of 2026 continued the tradition in a way that ties directly into one of the school's biggest recent changes: the transformation of the former library into the vibrant new Stovesand Center. For their gift, the class purchased eight stadium seats for the center's loft.

Each class at Bishop Diego is traditionally represented by a class color: orange for freshmen, blue for sophomores, and green for juniors. The senior class color is officially yellow, but true to their Cardinal pride, the Class of 2026 chose red instead.

And these are not just any stadium seats. They came from Shea Stadium formally, William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, in New York giving the Stovesand Center a small piece of sports history alongside its new life as a hub for all Cardinals.

Shea Stadium was the home of MLB’s New York Mets (1964-2008) and the New York Yankees (1974-1975) and the NFL’s New York Jets (1964-1983) and the New York Giants (1975). Opened on April 17, 1964, Shea Stadium hosted the World Series in 1969 1973, 1986 and 2000. Prior to the 1980 baseball season, the original wooden seats were replaced with red, green, blue and orange plastic seats. The final game played at Shea Stadium was on September 28, 2008.
