A Season to Remember - 2025 Bishop Diego Girls Tennis Recap
Pete Kirkwood, Head Tennis Coach
Memories that will last a lifetime, bonds that this team will have whenever they are together and the most enjoyable run to the CIF SS Division 8 championship that I have ever experienced-these are the takeaways I have for the Girls tennis 2025 historic season. The journey was truly remarkable highlighting the strength and spirit of our team.
This was a special group of young ladies who kept their heads high through the ebbs and flows of many tough matches and pressure packed moments. No matter what the obstacles they supported each other and faced every challenge with determination and positivity.
We began the season in a humble fashion losing to Carpinteria 13-5. All five points came via singles. Our doubles were not polished. It was the growth and improvement of our doubles teams and the continued stellar play from our singles that gave us the physical and mental toughness needed to win. Our progress became evident as each match contributed to our development and confidence.
The Cardinals finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Frontier league, then beat St. Bonaventure in a CIF automatic qualifying match by 2 games after tying 9-9 in sets. We had lost our previous two matches against St. Bonaventure. That was a true testament to the team's perseverance and skill.
That set us up for the most amazing five match winning streak in Bishop Diego Girls tennis history culminating in a CIF championship. We beat Santiago HS of Garden Grove in the final played at the Claremont club.
The Cardinals were down 8-9 in sets and one point from losing twice. The heroic performance of Victoria Heredia/Sonia Marquez-Miranda winning the final tiebreaker 7-3 tying the sets at 9-9.
As the CIF officials announced Bishop Diego the champions 78-71 in games won the celebration was on.
I will never forget team Cardinals jumping around, high fiving, crying, laughing, hugging and sharing in this moment. Very few athletes or coaches get to experience anything like it.
