Dear Cardinal Families,
We hope that you have been able to enjoy some meaningful and relaxing time with loved ones this summer. Proverbs reminds us that “A friend loves at all times, and a relative is born for adversity” (17:17). As we partner together in the great responsibility of educating your sons and daughters during these challenging times, we cherish the strength of our community, and continue to lean on each other for love and support.
Bishop Diego remains committed to providing a nurturing Catholic environment of educational excellence. This spring, we created a COVID Task Force made up of 5 subcommittees which continue to assess how to safely re-open the school for simultaneous in-person, synchronous remote instruction, and distance learning. We recognize that the situation is fluid, and that preparing for the need to be flexible with our families and staff will help everyone adjust as the Fall progresses. Each subcommittee was tasked with considering the various areas of school life that allow us to continue our mission to educate the whole person: Safety & Logistics, Curriculum & Instruction, Catholic Identity, Community & Wellness, and Technology. These committees included faculty, staff, parents and volunteers, and we maintained frequent communication with the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department to inform all decisions. Please note: all of this work assumes Santa Barbara County has moved off the monitoring “watch list” for 14 consecutive days, which would allow for the opening of school. As soon as that happens, Bishop is ready to open! Please see the governor’s directive here:
While the Task Force continues to work through the summer to put all health and safety supports in place, configure technology, train faculty and staff, update policies, and reimagine extracurricular activities, we have created a “Return to Campus” page on our website (#cardinalscomeback2020) in order to keep our families informed of back-to-school planning. We are working to create videos for families to supplement the orientation that will take place for students during the first week of school, and will publish those to this page before school opens. The Bishop family stands ready to support each other in this time of adversity, and by the grace of almighty God and his Son, Jesus Christ, we look forward to continued success and well-being in the 2020-21 school year.
Yours in Christ,
