September 2010 Newsletter

Head of School
Dr. Paul Harrington

The new school year opens with a deep sense of gratitude.  We welcome 85 freshman students and 11 transfer students (from as far away as China, Italy, Brazil, Oregon, and Vietnam) as well as our returning students for a beginning enrollment of 295.  This is phenomenal given that we closed the 2009-10 school year in June with 275 students.  Certainly we are delighted with the enrollment; however, some students will experience a larger class size than predicted or desired.  I will continue to work with school constituents to strategize how best to alleviate this situation in subsequent years.

In April, we welcomed Dr. Joe Reiken as our new Assistant Head of School.  He has settled into his new office and his door is open!  Father Tom moved down the hallway as he transitioned to our Advancement Office to spearhead our Gift Planning program.  We also welcome a familiar face, Mrs. Ashley Parker Snider, mother of Spencer and Greer Shull, who began this summer as our new Director of Admission and Public Relations.  Ashley holds a degree in English from Bates College (Maine) and has extensive experience in sales and marketing and public affairs.  She has served as an active board member at Direct Relief International and she currently sits on the board at the Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation here in Santa Barbara.  An active Bishop High parent, Ashley has assisted on the Parent Board and has been very involved with the boys’ volleyball program!  The new school year also brings a new face to the Math Department.  Mrs. Brianna Adam joined Bishop High this summer as she shared her knowledge with some members of the Class of 2014 in our Bridge Program.  Brianna holds a degree in Mathematics from UCSB and a California Teaching Credential in Mathematics.  For the past 8 years, Brianna served as the Mathematics Department Chair at Santa Barbara Junior High.  She has been a mentor teacher, a member of Student Study Teams, and chairperson for Santa Barbara County’s, California Partnership for Achieving Student Success (Cal-PASS).

The wow factor hit Bishop High again!  Generous benefactors who believe in the mission of our school funded our many summer projects.  These projects included a total renovation of the science labs and classrooms, a solar/greening project that will produce approximately 30% of our annual energy, a renovated boys' restroom, front landscaping continuation and the façade of the administration building received a facelift.  Fifty years of progress and excellence continues at Bishop High with appreciation and gratitude to our benefactors.

Parents are always welcome to any school event held during the school day.  This includes Mass (Thursdays and Fridays - check the daily schedule for times) and Adoration (8am to 8pm, Monday through Wednesday).   Visitors other than parents do need to sign in at the front office and wear a visitor badge.  This month we will gather several times to get to know each other better to ensure a quality-learning program for our students. All parents and guardians are expected to attend the General Parent Meeting at 5:30pm and Back-To-School Night at 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 15. Hospitality and special information tables will be available at 5:30pm.

To keep informed on the latest calendar changes, visit our website at www.bishopdiego.org.  The calendar PDF will indicate the date of the latest update.  The daily bell schedule can be found on the inside cover of the Parent-Student Handbook which is also on our website and Edline (www.edline.net).  Within the next week, our daily BDTV program will be available for viewing after 10:00am on our website. Later in September it also will be broadcast on Channel 21 at select times.

We request that all vehicles parked on the school grounds during the school day be registered through the Attendance Office.  There is NO CHARGE for this registration.  A non-adhesive numbered decal needs to be visible on the front windshield.  There are no assigned parking spaces on campus.  Families may register multiple vehicles and the registration simply includes the make, color, vehicle license plate and the driver’s name.

Finally, did you know?
The actual cost of education at Bishop García Diego High School is approximately $14,400 for each student?  Our tuition rate of $13,400 is well below the operational costs of the school and far less than local private secondary schools.  We make every effort to offer financial aid to families who cannot afford the full cost of a Bishop education.  Please do your best to support the school fundraising activities that help make up the difference in the tuition rate and the actual cost of educating each child.  In addition, parents please speak with your child about personal responsibility and respect for their schoolmates as well as care for the school.  Our benefactors willingly provided us with campus improvements and invest in the approximately 60% of our students on financial assistance.  We all need to do our part to encourage optimum student success as well as care for and protect our school facilities.

Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and I ask that you remember all of us here at school in your daily prayers.

Assistant Head of School
Dr. Joe Reiken

To all of our new and returning families, welcome to the Cardinal family and to the 2010-2011 school-year. I look forward to working with you and your children to insure they receive a rigorous college preparatory education that prepares them academically and spiritually for post-secondary study. We at Bishop High pride ourselves on being a supportive community of learners who work together in forming our students as men and women of service and witnesses of the Gospel message.  As the Assistant Head of School, I look forward to supporting you and our students as they begin or continue their journey towards higher education, prepared for university study and for life.

We are blessed to have a strong academic leadership team, with Ms. Mandy Combs serving as the Academic Dean of Humanities who oversees the English, World Language, Social Science, Visual & Performing Arts Departments and Sister Helen Wolkerstorfer as the Academic Dean of Mission who oversees the Theology Department and Campus Ministry program. This year I will serve as the interim Academic Dean of Science and will oversee the Science, Mathematics, Technology, and Physical Education Departments. Please make the Academic Deans your points of contact for support with curricular/department questions. For questions regarding specific classes, please continue to make the teacher of the class your initial point of contact. I encourage you to make an appointment with me after meeting with classroom teachers and Academic Deans if you need additional support.

On a final note, there has been a change to the 2010-2011 Parent Student Handbook. Please revise your Handbook on page 20 to read the following about grades and GPA Values:

A- = 3.67
B- = 2.67
C- = 1.67
D- = 0.67

Please make the following additional change:

Principal’s Honor Roll:  GPA 4.00+
Dean’s Honor Roll: 3.50 – 3.99

Thank you and I look forward to working with you in the years to come!

Dean of Students
Mr. Ray Vazquez '86

Welcome to the 2010/2011 school year. We are excited to have your students with us this year. Just a reminder to all students and parents - first period tardies are unexcused.  Students need to be at school and in their seats at 7:50 am.  There are many students on campus by 7:30.  Getting to school at this time could help all our drivers avoid the eight o’clock rush-hour traffic.  Students would be on time and ready to begin the day at a relaxed pace.  There will be NO student parking in the back parking lot.

Cold season is coming up and students might be bringing cold medicines to school.  A reminder to all parents and students:  all medications need to be in Mrs. McCarthy’s office with a note from the parent and/or doctor.  Medications should not be with the student.  The student has access to his or her medicine during the day.  Also, if your student exhibits flu-like symptoms, with a fever, they should not return to school until 24 hours after the fever has subsided. Swine flu is still a problem.

Our first Saturday school will be held on October 23th from 9:00 to 1:00.  Saturday school is mandatory for students who have received 5 or more demerits by this date.  There is also a $25.00 fee for each student.  If the mandatory Saturday school is missed it will be another $25.00 fee plus another Saturday school.  Ten demerits place a student on a discipline contract and the loss of extra-curricular activities for five weeks.

All students driving themselves to school need to get a parking pass from Mrs. McCarthy.  These are free and the stickers are not permanent.  Students’ cars without parking permits will be subject to towing.

The students look great and seem to understand and are complying with the dress code.  Thank you so much for supporting us on the home front.  You are the primary educators and we appreciate all your efforts.

Again, welcome and have a great first month.

Counseling Office
Ms. Lynette Patters
(9th and 10th grade student counselor)

Greetings from the counselor’s office.  The beginning of school has gone very smoothly.  Students are settling into their classes, and while there may be a few minor changes most schedules are set.  Thanks for everyone’s patience; it is always a huge job making sure each student is scheduled properly. The last day to add/drop is Wednesday, September 1st.

This year I will continue to advise freshmen and sophomores while working closely with Mrs. Hornbuckle, the College Counselor who works with juniors and seniors.

There is a way for parents to access their child’s grades: Edline. Parents: please note that the first official posting of grades on Edline will be Friday, September 3rd.  I am looking forward to working with the students and hope to meet many of their parents at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 15th.  Please contact your child’s teachers first  with any concerns, and then feel free to call or e-mail me if you need to follow up on  academic issues.

Prospective California Scholarship Federation members: sophomore through senior students who received a 3.5 GPA or above for Spring semester 2010 may be eligible to join this academic society.  Students should watch BDTV for information about picking up an application.  September 17th is the last day to turn in applications.

Mrs. Kara Hornbuckle (11th and 12th grade student counselor)

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! My goal is to support our students with their dreams of earning a college degree. Last spring I had the opportunity to meet with all of our seniors regarding their college plans. If you and your child have additional questions or concerns regarding college planning, please feel free to make an appointment with me. Bishop will also hold a series of college workshops designed to support students with the college admission’s process. The University of California Workshop will be held on September 27th at 6:30pm in room 202 and a Common Application workshop will take place in October. Additional information about these workshops will be available on BDTV.

SAT Boot Camp: Bishop will hold an SAT preparation bootcamp partnering with Catalyst on Saturday, October 2nd and Sunday, October 3rd from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Bishop for $125.00 per student. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn strategies and study skills in preparation for the SAT. We strongly encourage students to complete the SATs at least once by the end of their junior year. You can register for the SAT bootcamp by calling 800-235-0056 or by emailing Jared at JaredF@CatalystPrep.com.

Cardinal Standards
Mr. Michael Fay, CSP Coordinator

As you know, the mission of the school is to …provide [students] with the spiritual, personal, and intellectual knowledge to meet the enduring challenge of realizing their God-given potential…  One of the ways we address this mission is by promoting the “Cardinal Standards”.  These are six areas of personal growth and achievement that align with the mission: Faith and Service (spiritual), Action and Self-Reliance (personal), and Thought and Expression (intellectual).

The Cardinal Standards are a part of every course, sport, and extracurricular activity.  Teachers, coaches, and mentors explicitly refer to these Standards as they work with students.  The Standards are posted in every classroom. In addition, the school devotes four special homeroom periods for the students to explore and reflect on the standards.

This year, the Cardinal Standards homerooms will occur on the following “CSP Schedule” days:

Wed Sep 29, 2010
Wed Nov 17, 2010
Wed Feb 23, 2011
Thu Apr 6, 2011

In CSP homerooms, freshmen explore the meaning of the Standards and look for examples of the Standards in their own lives up to this point.  Sophomores look for good examples of the Standards in others.  Juniors reflect on their experiences, and write and review short draft essays on their growth in the standards.  Seniors turn in six 300-word essays, one on each Standard, in their English classes.  These are reviewed by faculty and returned during CSP homeroom for discussion.  Seniors also practice presentation skills.

Near the end of the year, we have “Cardinal Standards Day”.  All students wear mass dress and regular classes last only 30 minutes.  After lunch, all students go to pre-assigned rooms, and in each room, 5 or 6 seniors present their experiences of growing into and achieving results in the Standards.  Parents, as well as Trustees and other interested supporters of the school, are invited and encouraged to attend. The presentations are followed by an all-school celebration.

This year, Cardinal Standards Day falls on Friday, May 20.  Save the date!

Dean of Science
Dr. Joe Reiken

As the Dean of Sciences, it is my pleasure to announce the completion of the Science Wing renovation as well as the inauguration of the STEM Academy, which was designed to provide a challenging, focused, rigorous course of study for those students wishing to seek careers in the fields of science and engineering. There will be a meeting for all STEM Academy families during Back to School Night on September 15th to discuss the Academy and its future direction. Any student who qualifies to be in the STEM Academy may participate in this opportunity.

Last, please continue to make the teacher of the class your primary point of contact for questions or concerns regarding individual courses.

Thank you and please contact me if you have and questions.

Dean of Humanities
Ms. Mandy Combs

Welcome back, everyone, to a new and exciting year at Bishop. The energy is positive on campus and the Humanities Program members look forward to helping your student understand the relevance and interconnectedness of the curriculum. Each month, faculty will share a little about what’s happening in the classroom. If you ever have questions or comments about your student’s classes, teachers are happy to address them.

Visual and Performing Arts
Research shows that music education improves students’ organizational skills, analytical thinking, teamwork, and self-esteem. Additionally, colleges look favorably on musician applicants. Advanced Band is still accepting students interested in performing with the Band.  Advanced Band. is a Fine Arts class that fulfills the Bishop, Cal State, and U.C. requirements for the Arts.  We are currently reacquainting ourselves with our instruments and working on Pep Band music for our home varsity football games.  Daily warm-up exercises incorporate scales, a variety of rhythms, and common music terminology all designed to help reinforce basic music theory and musicianship.

English
Junior American Literature students started the school year by discussing and writing about Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, their summer reading selection. This collection of short stories about the Vietnam War provides an alternative to nonfiction or textbook-based exploration of this controversial war. The discussion and writing exercises in English class build understanding and context for students in preparation for their study of this era in American History class later this year.

Dean of Mission
Sr. Helen

Campus Ministry
Mrs. Jennifer Winnewisser

We are off to an amazing start! The Campus Ministry Team came together a few days before the start of school for a day of retreat, reflecting on our mission for the 2010-2011 school year. We had a great time. The incredible Campus Ministry Team members for this year are: Mary Lou Bailey, Allison Carr, Corinna Casey, Robert Connolly, Katie Delgadillo, James Fazio, Annette Gonzalez, Crystal Guzman, Christopher Helkey, Ben Kwock, Jade Lamas, Mackenzie Lopez, Alan Pacheco, Stephanie Ramirez, Nikoll Rodriguez, Spencer Shull, Kelsey Stimson, Augusto Vega, and Cody Yokubaitis. Please keep us all in your prayers as we help guide the Bishop García Diego High School community closer to Christ, who is the center of who we are.

On Thursday, August 26th, we celebrated our Welcome Mass. The gym was transformed into a festive worship space and we welcomed back Father Tom as our celebrant. The Class of 2014 was recognized in several ways. Coming from many junior high schools, they bring with them those traditions. At the offertory procession freshman representatives clothed the altar with the colors of their previous school.  This reminded us that each of them brings to Bishop their gifts and talents to share as we come together to embrace the old and create new Cardinal traditions. The freshmen were also presented with their Bibles. We pray that they will use them to learn, to grow, to guide and to protect them as they walk through their years here at Bishop.

A big Cardinal thank you goes out to senior parent Mark Wietstock for sharing his music with us. We are also thankful for the gifted students at Bishop who shared their beautiful voices and talents with instruments: Alexis Garcia, Maggie Langhorne, Alan Pacheco, Brandon Roberts, Patrick Schlesselmann, Allison Swift,  Sierra West, and Kirsten Wietstock.  Praise God for the talent among us!

On Wednesday, September 8th, the freshmen will gather at Serra Hall for their class retreat. Please be on the lookout for more information, directions to the hall, and permission slips. The Team looks forward to this fun day together!

The sophomore retreat is scheduled for Monday, September 27th. Can’t wait!

Campus Ministry’s Office of Social Justice is in the planning stages of organizing a Christian Service Faire. If you are involved in a non-profit organization that would like to set up a booth at this faire to promote student volunteers, please contact me right away at jwinnewisser@bishopdiego.org.

Blessings to all for a wonderful school year!

Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.

Cardinal Club
Dr. Tim Mathis

The Cardinal Club is an association of parents whose purpose is to promote Bishop High School’s athletic program. With a six figure annual budget the CC’s job is to fund and support athletic teams: trainers, CIF officials & fees, stadium rental, uniforms, equipment, transportation, awards and banquets.  Over 75% of Bishop students participate in at least one sport each year, and approximately 50% participate in 2 or more sports!

All parents and students are considered members of the Club and may attend the meetings, which are held the second Monday of each month.  The first meeting of the school year is Monday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Bishop Library.  If you have an interest in athletics at Bishop, consider joining the Cardinal Club.

The biggest fundraiser for the Athletic Department and the Cardinal Club each year is the Cardinal Club Event – (Truck Raffle), set for Saturday, November 13, 2010.  This is a fun evening for everyone with an open bar and hearty hors d’oeuvres, which has raised over $100,000 for our athletic program each of the past few years.  This is also a junior class fundraiser for Prom.  When:  Saturday Night, November 13, 2010 at 6:00 p.m.  Raffle sales for the Grand Prize, a Nissan Frontier King Cab XE Pickup Truck or $20,000 cash, has already begun.  Each family received two $150 tickets for the truck raffle and is required to sell or purchase both tickets.  Odds of winning the grand prize or one of 20 cash prizes are 1-in-25 based on the sale of 500 tickets.  Please don’t stop selling after your mandatory two tickets are sold; the more we sell the more money available for our student athletes!  Parent help is needed with set up, clear up, food prep, etc. for this event.  Contact Stacey Carr if you have not received your raffle tickets.

Advertising space is still available in the Fall Sports Program.  Contact Stacey Carr or a Cardinal Club member to secure your spot before they are all gone.

This year’s ASB Team is comprised of nineteen fabulous student leaders!  Four are returning students and fifteen are new to ASB.  Over the summer the senior boys assisted with some reorganization of the ASB work area and Cardinal Store.  ASB leaders helped with the sale of Cardinal apparel and school supplies at the Book Sale.  Officers kicked off the school year with the Spirit Cheer at the Welcome Assembly.  For Welcome Week, the senior and freshman classes were broken up into ten groups to produce their lip sync, and the junior and sophomore ASB leaders sponsored a welcome lunch for transfer students and treats attached to their lockers.  On Sunday, August 29th ASB participated in a retreat which was held at The Palace Grill.  Finally, student leaders will soon have a new look with their ASB apparel – look out, it’s going to be a great year!

What is Annual Giving? Annual giving is the basis of a comprehensive development program in any school. It helps sustain programs and activities that are not covered by tuition. Simply, annual giving is the best way possible for parents, alumni, grandparents, friends ,board members, faculty, and staff to help make a financial difference in the future of Bishop. Your investment on an annual basis through an annual fund contribution, at a level that you are comfortable with, will help to raise necessary funds for important school objectives.

The Annual Fund is made up of annual gifts from the above mentioned constituents. The unrestricted funds are added to the general fund of the school's budget for use in:

  • Enhancing the programs and services offered to our students
  • Meeting current operating expenses
  • Maintaining the physical plant

Unlike public schools which are funded by tax dollars, independent non-profit schools including Bishop, rely solely upon tuition, its endowment income, and annual fundraising to meet its operating expenses. An annual gift to the operating budget is a tangible vote of confidence in your school's total program.

Thank you for your vote.

Gift Planning
Fr. Tom Elewaut

Retired from school administration - affirmative.  Life-long supporter of Bishop Garcia Diego High School - always.  It is my pleasure to serve the school community this year as Chaplain and in the Advancement Office for Gift Planning.  One benefactor recently asked me what that meant.  I responded, “Getting Bishop High into your will.”  The future of our school depends on sustained financial support for the Adopt-A-Student campaign and the Frs. Sal, Alonzo and Alexander Alumni Endowment fund.

Gift Planning will benefit our students long into the future.  One way to gift the school is to remember Bishop High in your will.  No bequest is insignificant.  I try to lead by example and recently had my Trust and Will modified to include Bishop García Diego High School.  Getting Bishop High into your will and thereby providing security long into the future provides hope to our students and their families that a faith-based education will be attainable to them.  In the next couple of months the Advancement Office will develop a comprehensive Gift Planning program that I hope to share with you, a valued member of our school community.

Besides ministry at Bishop High and weekend Masses at San Roque Parish, I am also associated with Loyola Marymount University supervising MA/Credential candidates in the School of Education, Institute of School Leadership and Administration.

Shalom
