Bishop Garcia Diego High School is proud to have an active student council to represent the entire student body; provide fun, responsible and diverse activities; and demonstrate youth leadership through school service. Representatives for each class are elected each school year. These officers receive credit for attending the Student Council Leadership class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Student Council is moderated by Ms. Amanda Combs, Dean of Activities.
ASB Activities Calendar (not comprehensive)
August
General meeting with all ASB members to discuss upcoming activities and to set the dates for dances and other pre-determined activities. A DJ company should be decided upon for the rest of the year as well as the photographer at dances and homecoming events.
Senior officer meeting to plan for Welcome Week. To take place at least one week before school starts.
Welcome Week activities and dance sponsored by the senior class. May include lunchtime games or competitions; signs around campus; goody bags are distributed to all freshmen and new students. All of ASB decides on the dance theme; senior reps promote, decorate and sell tickets at the dance. No activities may take place that make freshmen feel threatened or uncomfortable in any way. Funded by the senior class account. Funds must be raised from activities to be determined by the class reps and the moderator.
September
Fall Sports Rally: organized and executed by the pep rally coordinators with the assistance of the Spirit Commissioners. Introduces the cheerleaders and the various coaches and their teams. Includes fun games or activities, cheers, music, etc.
Club Fair in the quad during lunch in mid to late September. Each club sets up a table to attract new members, distribute information, etc. Attractive, creative displays are encouraged. All Officers help publicize and organize the fair, post deadlines for new club applications, etc. All new clubs must be approved by administration prior to participating in the club fair.
Freshman class elections. Sophomore class reps are responsible for publicizing the elections, distributing campaign information and applications. Candidates read their speeches in homeroom in the MPR and then all freshmen vote. Winners are announced at the end of the day.
Spirit Week meeting. Includes parent board, all ASB members and class moderators. Agenda includes the discussion of the theme; expenses; supervision; changes to previous year's activities; bell schedules, etc. Attendees may then divide into grade levels and begin creating the work schedule for the coming month.
Order Homecoming Crowns and Medals: Sophomore class reps should select and order the medals and crowns for the Homecoming candidates. Funded through the sophomore ASB account. Order early to get them here on time.

Spirit Week meetings should be open to any interested students. Responsibilities should be delegated, a plan devised and accountability established.
Bulletin board and judges: Spirit Commissioners put up the SW bulletin board with point charts, schedule of events, etc. at least one week before SW. Objective staff members are chosen as judges and the guidelines and score sheets are distributed.
October
Spirit Week is the week of the Homecoming Football game.
Monday: Homecoming Court Presentation Assembly-organized by the sophomore class reps. As soon as the Homecoming Court Candidates are announced, the reps need to gather each nominee's bio, photos and song for the presentation. The music must be approved by the sophomore class moderator. Photos must be submitted in digital format via e-mail or CD. The bio, song and photos must be submitted by Monday, the week before the assembly. Candidates will sign a contract agreeing to these requirements or will give up their nomination. Sophomore reps will create a PowerPoint slide show of photos, stage the music, etc. Class officers find out from the nominees who they want to present them during the assembly. A flower for each princess candidate shall be secured by the sophomore class officers.

Friday: Red and White Day- class reps and pep rally coordinators organize and execute the pep rally and class shows. One week before, signs should be made, gym decorations planned, script written and agenda created. Standard pep rally organizational process should be followed.
Halftime presentation: organized by Dean of Activities and junior parents. Separate Court Presentation information is available.
Food Drive: Each class is responsible for promoting the food drive. The Dean of Activities will weigh the donations and keep track of the totals. Food drive winners will be announced at the end of the week. Minimum of 10 pounds per student, per class.
Homecoming Dance
Organized by the sophomore class reps and sophomore parent reps. A semi-formal dance in gym or other venue from 8:00-11:00. Requires significant decorating and planning. Should include setting up roughly eight round tables with tablecloths and a centerpiece. There should be a snack table with drinks; etc. The DJ should have been scheduled at the beginning of the year. Must include the presentation of the newly crowned King and Queen. Confirm photographer at the beginning of September. Funded by the sophomore class primarily through ticket sales.
Senior Ropes Course takes place mid-month on the day of the PSATs. Dean of Activities organizes this.
Halloween dress up day: on Halloween day or the closest Friday. The Spirit Commissioners publicize and organize the lunchtime costume contest. Use BDTV and posters. Pre-determined categories may be announced and winner is determined by audience applause. Small prize is awarded to the winner in each category. An extended lunch may be requested well in advance.
November
Mock Elections: information provided by the League of Women Voters. Takes place before Election Day. Promoted and organized by the _______________ class reps. Voting takes place in the library. Reps visit social studies classes with a spiel about the importance of voting, etc.
Beat Carp Rally: organized and executed by the pep rally coordinators with the assistance of the Spirit Commissioners. Focuses on the football game against Carp. Includes fun games or activities, cheers, music, etc. to get students excited about the game and players pumped up.
Junior ring mass organized by the junior class moderator in conjunction with campus ministry.
December
Christmas Fair held during lunch in the gym. Clubs sponsor tables selling or giving away baked goods; hosting a raffle, etc.
January
Winter Sports Rally: organized and executed by the pep rally coordinators with the assistance of the Spirit Commissioners. Introduces the various coaches and their teams. Includes fun games or activities, cheers, music, etc.
Beat Carp Rally for basketball.
Compatibility survey sponsored by _____________ class. Proceeds benefit that class. Results may be sold on Valentine's day or at the Spring Fling Dance as an incentive for students to attend.
February
Rose-a-grams or candy-grams promoted sold and delivered by ______________class reps. Funded by that class and proceeds benefit that class.
March
Spring Fever Week organized by all class officers. To include the Spring Sports Rally and Spring Fling Dance.
Spring Sports Rally: organized and executed by the pep rally coordinators with the assistance of the Spirit Commissioners. Introduces the various coaches and their teams. Includes fun games or activities, cheers, music, etc.
Spring Fling Dance: Takes place in the gym. Freshman officers determine the theme and formality of the dance. Freshman class reps. promote, fund and organize the dance. Proceeds benefit the freshman class.
April
Bishop Bowling Bonanza: sponsored by all-school ASB officers at Zodo's in Goleta. Teams pre-register for two hours of fun bowling. Trophies may be awarded to the "winning" team. Executed as a fundraiser for ASB general fund. Staff, students and families are strongly encouraged to attend. All officers are responsible for promoting it on BDTV the couple of weeks prior to registration.
Class Elections: application process begins, followed by campaigning, and finally the speeches and voting. Senior reps and ASB officers promote, explain and support the election process. Reps offer assistance to candidates. Arrangements are made for candidates to read their speeches during homeroom followed immediately by voting. ASB candidates will give their speeches in front of the entire school in the gym during an extended break or lunch. Winners will be announced at the end of each day.
May
Faculty Appreciation Week: class reps organize any activities and small tokens of appreciation throughout the week. Each class is responsible for one day. The luncheon is sponsored and funded by the Parent Board.
Talent Show: organized by one class officer from each grade forming the Talent Show Committee. Committee is responsible for promoting, scheduling try-outs, arranging for the gym. etc. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded. Prizes secured through donation. Judges will include two teachers, a parent, a student, staff member and administrator. Committee will begin to meet one month in advance. Faculty are encouraged to enter as well.
Prom: organized, promoted and executed by the junior class with the help of the junior parent reps and the class moderator. Promotion should begin at the very beginning of the month. Planning will begin as early as November, i.e. securing the venue, caterer, etc. Crowns should be ordered no later than the end of March followed by other supplies. Funded by the junior class with monies from the Special Event fundraiser.
Final ASB meeting with existing officers: evaluate the school year and have a farewell celebration. Funded by ASB general account.
First ASB meeting with new officers: discuss goals for the coming year, decide on various class responsibilities, lay the ground rules, discuss various fundraising activities and have a farewell celebration. Funded by ASB general account.
