Current Announcements: Joe Reiken, Head Coach Coach Reiken assumes the helm of the Men’s program for the fifth year with a record of (.799). Beginning his coaching career at Bishop in 2003 as the JV coach, Reiken lead the JV team for two years to some surprising finishes (3rd in 2004 and 2nd in 2005 in the Frontier league). In 2006, Reiken took over the varsity team and improved the team’s record from 2-8 in 2005 to 6-4 (3rd) in 2006 and the first CIF appearance in 4 years. In 2008 he lead the Men's program to the second CIF Final Four appearance in school history, lead by big hitters Mark Hebda and Garrick Vanderfin and setter Sean McIver. In three years time, Reiken has produced 2 High School Senior All-Americans (Mark Hebda, `08, SBCC, Garrick Vanderfin, '09, UCLA), and three All CIF-Southern Section players (Mark Hebda, `08, Garrick Vanderfin, `09, Sean McIver, `09). He was also selected as the Coach of the Year in 2006. In 2006, his first year assuming the helm of the women's program, Coach Reiken finished the season with a coaching record of (.875) and impressive league coaching record of (1.000) and a 29 game winning streak. In addition, he lead the Lady Cardinals to the 2nd round of the CIF playoffs where they took a tough loss to the girls at Pasadena Poly. Prior to coming to Bishop, Reiken served as the Head Clinician for the USYVL in Goleta. In 2004, Reiken trained with some of the most internationally renowned coaches, including Bill Neville (USA Team Assistant Coach, 1984-1988), Sue Gozanzky (UC Riverside Head Coach), and Cecile Reynaud (FSU Head Coach, retired). Through his training, he obtained his licensure through USA Volleyball. Reiken also coaches in the Santa Barbara Boys Volleyball Club under director Ricardo doMonte. Hailing from Manhattan Beach, California, Coach Reiken attended Mira Costa High School, one of the premiere volleyball powerhouses in the country. Upon graduating from UCSB with honors with a degree in psychology, Coach Reiken returned to graduate school and received an MA in Education and secondary teaching credential in mathematics. He also holds a Ph.D. in teaching and learning from UC Santa Barbara.
