Golden Graduation Class of 1959
The Class of 1959 gathered together at the Santa Barbara Sunken Gardens on Saturday, June 6, 2009 to take part in the school’s graduation ceremony. The Class of 1959 was the last class to graduate from Santa Barbara Catholic High School. As classmates arrived smiles and laughter emerged as they remembered each other from fifty years ago. The “golden graduates” were recognized at the ceremony by Fr. Tom Elewaut, school principal and Patty Charest, Alumni President (to read Patty Charest’s speech, see the side bar).
Following the ceremony, classmates met at Bishop High School for a special luncheon provided by the school and the Alumni Association. Throughout the afternoon friends shared stories from fifty years ago remembering teachers, coaches and those who were unable to attend.
Fr. Tom and Patty presented each “golden grad” with a diploma; the classmates were just as thrilled to receive this diploma as they were fifty years ago. A tour of the campus and many pictures were taken. Classmates left with Cardinal apparel and accessories from the school along, with a vow to each other that they would not let another fifty years go by without getting together.
