Bishop High logo

As a non-profit, independent, private Catholic high school, Bishop strives to keep student tuition affordable while governing the school with dedication, fulfilling its mission statement to educate students to meet the enduring challenge of realizing their God-given potential in a multi-cultural society. It is an essential need to provide educational opportunities for all who qualify and have the desire to attend our college preparatory program. With this in mind, the Board of Trustees created an Alumni Endowment Fund and the Adopt-A-Student Program, the sole purpose of which is to provide financial aid for students with demonstrated need. Memorial Scholarships also assist Bishop High School students as they pursue their goals.

As tuition increases and the cost of living in Santa Barbara escalates dramatically, the need for financial assistance becomes an increasing imperative. Containing costs becomes a challenge as it is essential that the school pay competitive salaries in order to attract and retain excellent faculty, staff, and coaches. Currently, 60% of our student body receive some level of financial assistance. For the 2010 - 2011 school year Bishop will need to raise $1,000,000 to meet this challenge. Friends of Bishop, Parents, Grandparents and Business Partners alike, through charitable giving Bishop can provide a faith-based, values enriched, college preparatory education whereby our graduates are Ready for College, Ready for Life.

Annual Fund: Making a Difference

What is Annual Giving?
Annual giving is the basis of a comprehensive development program in any school. It helps sustain programs and activities that are not covered by tuition. Simply, annual giving is the best way possible for parents, alumni, grandparents, of alumni, board members, faculty, staff and friends to help make a financial difference in the future of Bishop García Diego High School. Your investment on an annual basis through an annual fund contribution, at a level that you are comfortable with, will help to raise necessary funds for important school objectives. The Annual Fund is made up of annual gifts from the above mentioned constituents. The unrestricted funds are added to the general fund of the schools budget for use in:

  • Meeting current operating expenses

  • Maintaining the physical plant

  • Enhancing the programs and services offered to our students

Traditionally, strong institutions have strong annual funds. Catholic Independent schools should be no different than any other school, college or university. An annual gift to the operating budget is a tangible vote of confidence in your schools total program.

Gift Planning

Planned giving, sometimes referred to as gift planning, may be defined as a method of supporting Bishop Garcia Diego High School that enables philanthropic individuals or donors to make larger gifts than they could make from their income. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor's estate.

Thus, by definition, a planned gift is any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning.

By contrast, gifts to the annual fund are made from a donor’s discretionary income, and while they may be budgeted for, they are not planned.

Whether a donor uses cash, appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, etc., the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very attractive to both donor and Bishop Garcia Diego High School .

Alumni Endowment Fund

Once a Cardinal, Always A Cardinal

Frs. Sal, Alexander and Alonso Alumni Endowment Fund
In 2005, a special Alumni Endowment Fund honoring Fathers Salvadore Parisi, OFM, Alexander Manville, OFM, and Alonso De Blas, OFM, was established. These three teachers represent many years of dedicated service to Catholic High and Bishop High students. They are honored for their dedication to the Cardinal Values, their years of service and the spirit of leadership they imparted.

BGDHS has established this Fund for the Future to support, uphold and perpetuate the educational work of Bishop Garcia Diego High School, Inc. An endowment is a fund that is created so that the principal deposit remains intact in perpetuity. Only the income that the principal generates may be expended. Friends of Bishop and Alumni alike are encouraged to contribute to the endowment fund to build a legacy so that young people will continue to be educated with care, love and discipline.

Membership to the Cardinal Alumni Association is open to anyone who attended Santa Barbara Catholic High or Bishop Garcia Diego High School and their parents. Imagine, if every Alumnus contributed only $50, the Alumni Endowment would grow by $250,000 in one year! By investing in the school, the Alumni would be securing the future of the school while providing students with demonstrated need, the opportunity to experience a Bishop High School education.

The Mary Iannelli Memorial Scholarship Fund

Mary Iannelli

Founded in memory of Mary Iannelli, mother of Board of Trustee Member, Ralph Iannelli, the Iannelli Family wishes to honor her memory by assisting Bishop students who also demonstrate an undestanding of the importance of art in our society.

The Mary Iannelli Memorial Scholarship Award offers two awards, each in the amount of $1,000. Awards are available to BGDHS students for tuition assistance. Students should demonstrate a love for the arts and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The Rodney J. Shull Memorial Scholarship Fund

Rodney Shull

Rodney J. Shull was a 1982 graduate of Bishop High School, a natural leader, a good listener and the type of person who lit up the room when he entered.

A gifted athlete, loyal friend and excellent student, Rodney went on to graduate from Stanford University in 1987. His adherence to high standards for himself whether on the field of an athletic event, or within the classroom defined him as an exemplary individual. His love of life was demonstrated in his love for children, all children, and his own in particular. A sudden illness took his life in 1998. He is a member of the Bishop Hall of Fame and has received the Bishop Lifetime Achievement Award. He is survived by his wife, Ashley, and three children.

The Rodney Shull Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 award available to a BGDHS student who demonstrates good citizenship, college preparatory academic standards (minimum GPA of 3.0), athletic participation in two sports and financial need.
