Internship
(summer following Junior year)

  • * (DE – SBCC): Dual Enrollment Course with Santa Barbara City College.  These courses are taught at Bishop High by our faculty and students receive both high school and college credit
  • Courses in red are considered core classes of the STEM Academy

STEM Academy students are required to join and participate in Bishop High’s Science and Robotics Club.  This club may meet at lunch time, before school, or after school.

The 4-year plan above is a proposed overview of the STEM Academy course of studies.  Courses and the order in which they are taken may be subject to change.

Students enrolled in the STEM Academy must maintain an overall 3.50 GPA or higher at each semester grading period and a 3.75 GPA or higher in STEM Academy core classes (identified above in red).

Future Development of the STEM Academy:

  • Offer additional courses/electives in the STEM field (i.e. AP Biology, Engineering Physics, Robotics, Medical Ethics)
  • Hire an additional (part-time) science teacher
  • Partner with local STEM-minded businesses to secure internships for students following their junior year
  • Student participation in the UCSB STEM program following their junior year

Admission Process and Requirements:

  • Incoming Freshmen: Complete the BISHOP/HIGH STEM application in addition to the BISHOP/HIGH application for admission.  The 2010-11 STEM application is available for download from the “Admission” page at www.bishopdiego.org.  The STEM application should be submitted to the admissions office along with the BISHOP/HIGH application and fee.
  • Contact the Director of Admissions to sign-up for and take the HSPT (High School Placement Test) in January or February.
  • STEM applicants must score in the 75th percentile or higher nationally, in both Reading and Math on the HSPT.
  • The transcripts of STEM applicants must show “A” and “B” grades throughout seventh and eighth grade.
  • Current BISHOP/HIGH students or Transfer Students: Students in grades 10-12 are invited to petition to join the STEM Academy.  A meeting with your academic counselor and the STEM Program Coordinator is required.  Student petitions will be considered if the student is on-track for graduation and meets the STEM Academy requirements at the time of the request.
