Department Philosophy:
The Social Studies Department exists to help students understand ongoing historical patterns and the interconnectedness of the human experience. The department strives to provide students with the historical background and analytical tools necessary to comprehend and evaluate social, political, religious, intellectual, technological, and economic events and patterns. In addition, the department organizes curriculum in accordance with California State Content Standards for the Social Studies, and works diligently to meet the professional teaching standards outlined by the state of California. Instructors in the department make every effort to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, to implement a variety of instructional methods as to reach students of varying learning styles, and to design assignments that provide students with opportunities to showcase the learning goals set forth by Bishop Garcia Diego High School. The department recognizes the differing needs of all students and acknowledges the right of each individual student to meet their God given potential. Through the lessons of World and United States History, and the study of political and economic theory, the Social Studies Department supplies students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective and responsible citizens of the world.
